Paul Norwood grew up the son of a lobsterman on the coast of Maine and decided early on that he would rather paint the sea than fish from it. He went on to study fine art and graduate from Syracuse University with a BFA. After a long career in advertising, he now devotes all his time to painting. Norwood and his family recently relocated to San Francisco, a symbolic move as he credits the Bay Area Figurative Artists of the 1950s as a major source of inspiration. His painting is informed by a colorist approach, and also a simplification and abstraction of form.
