Kathy Cousart is our featured artist for the month of March.
I paint almost everyday and love to paint Alla Prima from life. What interests and fascinates me the most is the play of light and shadow and the effect that it has on color and value.
Determining my vision for the painting and what I want to say with oil paint is the first step for me. I then want to make sure I have a strong design with solid fundamentals that capture what the painting is all about.
I love to begin each painting with huge abstract washes of beautiful pale color to create a layering effect while still leaving some raw linen untouched that I protect throughout the painting process. I love having parts of the painting process showing whether it’s a charcoal mark from my drawing or some of the under painting peeking through. It’s all about controlling where you put that paint and making decisions with every mark along the way.
I paint with a very limited palette of just the three primary colors- one red, yellow and blue and then white. I have learned to mix any color I need from just those three and can really play in shifting those temperatures. I find that gives me a rich harmony in my paintings and enjoy the challenge of mixing my own beautiful color with oil paint.
